Gavin MortonBritish textile designer, 1867–1954

Alexander Morton & Co, was founded in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1870. The company was a key player in the design renaissance at the turn of the century. They manufactured a wide variety of woven textiles and carpets. Initially produced designs by Day, Dresser and Talbert, in the 1880s colored madras and wool tapestries for Morris and Company were also produced.

In the 1895 (–1908), Alexander Morton’s nephew, Gavin Morton, was hired to run the design studio at the factory. Gavin Morton adapted many bought-in designs for the loom and amalgamated ideas so it has proved difficult to state with any certainty which designer drew which pattern unless the original paper design has survived. Gavin was also an excellent designer in his own right.
