Alan Magee was born in 1947 in Newtown, Pennsylvania and studied in Philadelphia at the Tyler School of Art and the University of the Arts. In 1969, Magee embarked on a career in illustration with regular clients including Time, Atlantic, The New York Times, and publishers Ballantine and Bantam Books. By the late 1970s, the artist devoted himself exclusively to his own painting practice and began exhibiting in 1980. Magee’s detailed renderings of commonplace objects from the natural or build environment draw beauty to the mundane. The artist’s work has been the subject of numerous retrospectives at museums throughout the United States and abroad including the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania in 2003; the Frye Art Museum in Seattle in 2005; and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockland in 2007. In addition to participating in many group exhibitions, the artist is represented in the public collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Newark Museum of Art, and the Portland Museum of Art.
