American artist, 1851–1938
BiographyBorn and raised in Philadelphia, Susan Macdowell studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for six years beginning in 1876. She won many prizes there including the Mary Smith Prize and the Charles Toppan Prize. She studied with Thomas Eakins, who she married in 1884. During their marriage she painted sporadically and continued to exhibit in group shows. After her husband's death, she painted and exhibited more frequently. Like her husband and her father, Eakins also practiced photography.
