Lee SturgesAmerican printmaker, 1865–1954

Born in Chicago, Sturges attended the Markham Academy in Milwaukee, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Sturges joined the family manufacturing business, Chicago Stamping Company and patented many inventions, including a compact personal etching press. An active etcher, especially from the 1920s through the 1940s, Sturges exhibited nationally, published articles in the art press, and won awards for his etchings. The Elmhurst Historical Museum in Illinois has the largest collection of his etchings, as well as engraving plates, sketchbooks, scrapbooks, and correspondence.
