Elaine MayesAmerican photographer, born 1936

A photojournalist and longtime professor, Mayes is best known for her portraits of rock musicians and the residents of San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district, taken in the late 1960s. She became the official photographer of the Steve Miller Band and worked with Victor Moscoso to design their first album cover. She taught at the University of Minnesota, Hampshire College, and New York University. Mayes has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation and her work is many museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
