Charles Bird KingAmerican painter, 1785–1862

King was a portrait artist best known for his many portraits of Native American leaders and tribe members. Raised in Newport, Rhode Island, he studied with Edward Savage in New York and with Benjamin West at the Royal Academy in London. King settled in Washington, D.C., where he became a successful portrait painter, whose subjects included political leaders. On a government commission, King produced more than 143 paintings of Native Americans between 1822 and 1842. He painted Native American leaders in his Washington studio when they visited the nation's capital.
