Clifton JohnsonAmerican illustrator, author, and photographer, 1885–1935

During the mid-1880s, Clifton Johnson began to write articles and produce illustrations for local publication in his native eastern Massachusetts. He then attended the Art Students League in New York City, undertaking the practice of the three arts of writing, illustration and photography that would comprise his career. Johnson had an avid interest in botany, natural science, and local history/folklore. His illustrations and publications were primarily in the realm of children's literature and folktales, and his photography comprised of scenes from country life.
