Gretna Campbell graduated from Cooper Union in New York in the late 1940s and embraced the influence of Abstract Expressionism while maintaining an adherence to representational painting. She continued her studies at the Cummington School and the Art Students League and taught at the Brooklyn Museum, the New York Studio School, Yale School of Art, and Pratt Institute. Campbell received numerous awards and fellowships and was an Elected Associate of the National Academy of Design. Her work was exhibited at Ingber Gallery and Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York and was included in group exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, and the Portland Museum of Art, among others. Campbell is represented in the collections of the Delaware Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and Yale University.
