Robert Swain GiffordAmerican painter, 1840–1905
Gifford was an American landscape painter best known for his New England landscapes influenced by the French Barbizon school. Raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Gifford studied drawing with Albert van Beest and William Bradford there. After a short residence in Boston, in 1866 he moved to New York. One year later he was elected to the National Academy of Design. Gifford was also important in the American Etching Revival, being a founding member of the New York Etching Club and a regular contributor to the American Art Review.
