Iver Rose

American painter, 1899–1972
BiographyBorn in Chicago, Rose received his first art training in classes at Hull-House. He went on to study at the Art Institute and the Cincinnati Academy of Art. In the 1920s Rose moved to New York and found work as a commercial artist. When the Great Depression hit, he returned to Chicago and worked under the auspices of the WPA. Like many painters in the 1930s, Rose depicted heroic laborers in a social realist style. He summered in Rockport, Massachusetts, where he painted men working in the quarries and the fishing industry.
