Thomas ChimesAmerican painter, 1921–2009

Thomas Chimes was born in Philadelphia, attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and studied in New York City following World War II. He was influenced by Abstract Expressionism in the 1940s and 1950s, but returned to Philadelphia in 1953 to settle in that city. Chimes work throughout his career is highly personal and explores his interests in literature and the artists whose work he would have seen in his native Philadelphia—Thomas Eakins and Marcel Duchamp.
