Henry WallisEnglish painter, writer, and collector, 1830–1916
Henry Wallis (1830-1916) was born in London. He enrolled at the Royal Academy in 1848, but also studied in Paris under Marc Charles Gabriel Gleyre as well as at the Academie des Beaux Arts. His most famous painting was The Death of Chatterton, exhibited at the RA in 1856. This was followed by The Stonebreaker (exhibited 1858) The social realism of this painting, in addition to the use of vibrant colors and symbolic detail closely aligned with the Pre-Raphaelite painters.
