Lowengrund was born in Philadelphia and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She moved to New York to work as a journalist and studied printmaking with Joseph Pennell. She exhibited successfully in New York in the 1930s and 1940s. As a result of Margaret Lowengrund's effort to both produce and exhibit lithographs in the 1950s, the Pratt Graphics Center was formed. In 1956, then known as the Workshop, it became part of the Pratt Institute. Lowengrund was associate editor of Art Digest from 1948 to 1950.
