J. Jason Stewart received his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern Maine and his master of fine arts degree from the University at Albany, SUNY in 1983 where he studied with sculptor Richard Stankiewicz. The artist's painting practice is distinguished by its exploration of color, abstract form, and layering. Stewart has held residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and Yaddo Artists' Community in New York and has served as a visiting artist at Skidmore College and abroad in Berlin and Belgrade. He began exhibiting in New York in the late 1970s, and his work is included in the public collection of the Delaware Art Museum, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and the Portland Museum of Art in Maine, among others.
