Thomas Guernsey Moore

Based in Philadelphia for most of his career, Guernsey Moore attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and worked as a poster designer, bringing him into the circle of John Sloan in the 1890s. In 1899, with J. J. Gould (another young Philadelphia illustrator), he redesigned the format of the Saturday Evening Post, transforming it into an important showcase for American illustration. At the Post, he designed the distinctive masthead, produced 63 covers, and served as art director. His mature style as an illustrator featured elegant forms, dark outlines, and areas of flat, unmodulated color. He also worked as a muralist.
