Jimmie DurhamAmerican sculptor, performance artist, and video artist, 1940–2021

Jimmie Durham’s early political activism with the American Indian Movement informed his artistic practice and the materials and concepts explored in his sculpture. In 1968, he began study at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva and with three other artists, formed the Draga group. In 1973, he returned to the United States and became an organizer for the American Indian Movement. His involvement with Native American rights continued until a return to art making in 1980. He moved back to Europe in 1994 and explored cultural politics in his artistic practice until his death in 2021. Durham has published widely and his work in included in the Walker Art Center, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Tate Modern, among many others.
