Julian Edwin LeviAmerican painter, 1900–1982
A painter and longtime instructor of painting at the Art Students League in New York, Julian Levi worked in various styles but his greatest interest was painting the sea. Born in New York, Levi was raised in Philadelphia, where he entered the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at age 17. He traveled to Italy and spent four years in Paris. In 1932 he settled in New York, where he participated in the Federal Art Project. He had his first solo show in 1940 at the Downtown Gallery. Levi was active in the New York art community, and his works were acquired by major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art.
