Alfred LeslieAmerican painter, born 1927

Alfred Leslie was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1927 and studied at New York University, the Pratt Institute, and the Arts Students League. Throughout the mid-1940s and the 1950s, Leslie became associated with the second generation Abstract Expressionists. His first solo exhibition was held at Tibor de Nagy Gallery in 1952, and he was included in the seminal 16 Americans show at the Museum of Modern Art in 1959. In 1962, Leslie adopted a figurative style, which he found to be a more fulfilling mode of painting at the time. In addition to painting and printmaking, the artist is known for his work in film.
