Frank Leonard, better known as "Lank" was the cartoonist of the long-running comic strip Mickey Finn. Before gaining work as an artist, Leonard worked as a book keeper for a factory, studied business in school, and served in the U.S. Army during World War I. While working as a travelling salesman for a sproting goods firm Leonard begain taking the C. L. evans correspondance course in cartooning. He eventually took night courses at both the Art Student's Leagueand the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. By 1925 Leonard was finally working as a full-time cartoonist. He was an inker for Bray Productions animation studio and created sports cartoons for The New York Telegram, The New York Sun, and baseball magazines. By 1936 the McNaught Syndicate bought Mickey Finn and Leonard continued to draw the comic strip for the next 30 years.
