Lowell NesbittAmerican painter, 1933–1993
Lowell Nesbitt was born in Baltimore, graduated from the Tyler School of Art, and studied stained glass and etching at the Royal College of Art in London. Nesbitt exhibited throughout the United States and abroad and is perhaps best known for his large, photorealistic paintings and prints of flowers.
In 1969, Lowell Nesbitt was invited to participate in the NASA Art Program, which began in 1962 to encourage artists to document and interpret space exploration. Nesbitt focused his project on the first moon landing by the astronauts of Apollo 11. The artist produced a series of lithographs based on photographs taken during the July 1969 mission and accompanied these iconic images with a page of quotations from American astronauts.
