Jimmy ErnstAmerican painter, 1920–1984

Jimmy Ernst was born in 1920 in Cologne, Germany to the Dada and Surrealist artist, Max Ernst, and art historian, Louise Straus. In 1933, Ernst emigrated to the United States and worked in the film library at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and in 1942, became the director of Peggy Guggenheim's gallery, Art of This Century. The artist's first solo exhibition was held in 1943 at the Norlyst Gallery, and his work was included in numerous shows throughout the United States and abroad. Ernst's style transitioned between biomorphic, figurative forms to Abstract Expressionism at various points during his career.
