Allen Carter RedwoodAmerican illustrator and painter, 1844–1922

Born in Lancaster, Virginia, Redwood studied at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute for a year before returning south to fight for the Confederacy in the American Civil War. He sketched and wrote about the war. After the War, he became an illustrator, working for Harper's and The Century magazines. He traveled west in 1882 and thereafter produced many western-themed illustrations for popular magazines.
