Beisen KubotaJapanese painter, 1852–1906

An accomplished painter, journalist, and newspaper artist, Kubota traveled to the United States for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago as an artist-reporter for a Japanese newspaper. He visited Philadelphia in October 1893, where he lectured and demonstrated his technique at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, where Robert Henri taught. He visited Henri's studio. Henri and John Sloan practiced his technique for a while, carrying around brushes and small pots of ink to make quick, on-the-spot sketches.
