American painter, printmaker and sculptor, 1901–1989
BiographyBorn in Boston, Hoffman attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He was awarded a travel scholarship to study in Europe for two years. Returning to the States, he settled in New York. He produced a series of murals on mining for the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco and also explored the life of miners in his prints. He traveled through the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico and depicted the everyday life of miners and other workers in these places.
