Joseph HirschAmerican painter, muralist, and illustrator, 1910–1981

Joseph Hirsh began his training at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art and continued his studies with George Luks. The artist was part of the American realist tradition and focused his subject matter on social commentary. He was employed by the Works Progress Administration in Philadelphia in the 1930s and completed murals for the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Building and the Municipal Court. Hirsch produced artwork to illustrate the war effort during World War II, and after the war, he taught at the Chicago Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League in New York City.
