Colleen BrowningAmerican painter, 1918–2003

Born in England, Colleen Browning was educated at London's Slade School of Art and moved to the United States, settling in New York City in 1949. She was a major figure in the American realist movement in the 1950s and was heavily influenced by other established artists such as George Tooker and Ben Shahn. Her work was exhibited at and included in the collections of major museums such as The Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She was elected a National Academician in 1966 and served as an officer at the Academy.
