Mary CassattAmerican painter and printmaker, 1844–1926, active in France
Mary Cassatt was an Impressionist painter, best known for her intimate paintings of women and children. Born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh, Cassatt was raised in Philadelphia and in Europe. Starting at age 15, she attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She moved to Paris in 1866 and studied with Jean-Léon Gérôme. She spent much of her life in France, where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists.
