Walt Kuhn was a painter and dedicated promoter of modern art in America. Kuhn grew up in Brooklyn. At age 16 he moved to San Francisco to work as a cartoonist. Two years later he traveled to Paris and Munich for formal art training. He returned to New York in 1903 and in 1910 helped to organize the Exhibition of Independent Artists with Robert Henri. He was one of the key organizers of the 1913 Armory Show, helping to select the European works for the exhibition. His own paintings frequently feature circus and vaudeville performers.
