Rembrandt PealeAmerican painter, 1778–1860
Rembrandt Peale was the third of six surviving children of artist, naturalist, and museum entrepreneur Charles Willson Peale. Rembrandt was a successful portrait painter, best known for his many images of the American presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. He first met Washington in 1787 when his father painted the president, and Rembrandt painted Washington's portrait in 1785, though he was not satisfied with the result. Eventually, based on this first portrait, his father's paintings, and Sully's famous depiction, he painted more than 70 portraits of the first president.
