American painter, illustrator, and printmaker, 1879–1941
BiographyHarry Townsend was born in Camp Grove, Illinois, in 1879. Before coming to Wilmington about 1901 to study with Howard Pyle, Townsend attended the Art Institute of Chicago. Townsend studied at Pyle's Chadds Ford summer school in 1902 and 1903, and remained with Pyle until 1904, when he moved to New York.

In 1917, Townsend, with seven other artists, was commissioned a captain with the American Expeditionary Force and assigned to record the war. After the war he settled in Norwalk, Connecticut, where he painted, taught, and executed murals for local schools.
