Vaughn Shoemaker was born in Chicago, Illinois. As a cartoonist he spent 22 years working for the Chicago Daily News before going on to work for the New York Herald Tribune, the Chicago American, and Chicago Today. Shoemaker won multiple Pulitzer Prizes for Editorial Cartooning and was the creater of the character John Q. Public who represented the put-upon American taxpayer.
