William Henry SheltonAmerican illustrator, cartoonist, and author, 1840–1932

Born in Canada, Shelton served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. After the war, he settled in New York where he helped found the Art Students League. He worked as an illustrator and writer for most of the major magazines, including Collier's, Scribner's, and St. Nicholas. He also produced cartoons for the comic magazine Wild Oats.
