Hobson Lafayette Pittman

Born and raised in North Carolina, Pittman moved to Philadelphia to study art. In the 1920s, he attended Pennsylvania State College (now Pennsylvania State University), Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, and Columbia University in New York City. In 1920 he began spending summers at the artists' colony in Woodstock, New York. In 1931 he began teaching at Friends Central School in Overbrook, a Philadelphia suburb, where he would serve as director of art until 1957. He also taught at Pennsylvania State College, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Between 1939 and 1960, Pittman won prominent awards and his works entered many museum collections.
