William Schmedtgen was a newspaper illustrator in Chicago in the late 19th and early 20th century, and then a successful commercial artist and painter best known for his wildlife subjects. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. As a newspaperman, he covered historic events including the trial of the men accused of inciting the Haymarket Square riots and the Spanish-American War.
