Pickhardt was born in Westwood, Massachusetts, and attended Harvard University. He studied with Harold K. Zimmerman, who may have encouraged his interest in urban realism. After living briefly in New York City, Pickhardt returned to Boston where he married Rosamond Forbes, daughter of Edward Waldo Forbes, director of Fogg Museum of Art at Harvard. Pickhardt exhibited widely in Boston and New York, as well as nationally and internationally. He taught at the Worcester Museum School, the Fitchburg Art Museum and the Sturbridge Art School. Harvard University owns more than 30 works by the artist.
