Clarence Coles Phillips was born in Springfield, Ohio and attended Kenyon College. Afterwards he moved to Manhattan to study at Chase School of Art and start his own advertising agency. His most popular illustrations were created for Life magazine, but he also worked for Good Housekeeping as well, becoming their sole cover artist for two years.
