Samuel Johnson WoolfAmerican painter, illustrator, and printmaker, 1880–1948

Born in New York, Woolf studied with Kenyon Cox and George de Forest Brush at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. He worked as a correspondent in Europe during World War I. After the war he made hundreds of charcoal drawings of famous men for Time Magazine. He was best known as a portraitist.
