Marcus WatermanAmerican painter, 1834–1914

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Waterman became a respected painter, but little is known about his artistic training. He graduated from Brown University, and lived in New York for about 13 years, before moving to Boston. He traveled widely, including California, Europe, and Algeria, and moved to Italy in 1900. Waterman exhibited at the American Watercolor Society and the National Academy of Design. He is best known for landscapes and Orientalist scenes. He did some illustrating, most notably for an 1864 edition of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Snow-Image: A Childish Miracle.
