Ernest HaskellAmerican etcher and engraver, 1876–1925
A well-known illustrator, printmaker, and painter, Haskell is best known for etching, which he learned as a student of James McNeill Whistler. Born in Woodstock, Connecticut, Haskell had settled in New York City by age 19, where he found work as a designer of posters and an illustrator for popular magazines. He moved to Paris and studied at the Académie Julian and with Whistler. Returning to New York in the 1890s, he was active as a poster designer and portrait painter. Later in life he lived in California and then largely in Maine.
