Cartoonist George McManus was best known as the creator of Irish immigrant Jiggs and his wife Maggie, the constantly rowing main characters of his syndicated comic strip Bringing Up Father. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri and from a young age was known to have a sense of humor and a gift for drawing and cartooning, and began working as an errand boy for The Republican based on a characature he created of one of his school classmates. By 1904 he had published his first comic strip with that paper, and subsequently moved to New York City and began work for the New York World. Soon he was brought on by The New York American due to the popularity of his comic strip The Newlyweds. He produced Bringing Up Father, inspired by the musical comedy The Rising Generation from 1913 until his death in 1954.
