Michael A. Smith

Born in Philadelphia, Michael A. Smith has been working in photography since 1966. In 1967 he committed to using a large-format view camera and contact printing, the process he continues to favor. In 1981, Smith's first book, Landscapes, 1975–1979 was awarded the grand prize for a book at the Rencontres Internationale de la Photographie, the renowned annual photography festival in Arles, France. He has received two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and has been featured in more than 200 exhibitions all over the world. Smith's recent books have focused on portraits and landscape photographs.
