Dan SmithAmerican painter and illustrator, 1865–1934

A native of Greenland who received his early training in Denmark, Dan Smith was a versatile and prolific illustration who began his career in about 1890 as a sketch artist for Leslie's Weekly in New York. He covered the American West until 1897 when he joined Hearst's newspapers and worked as a war artist-correspondent during the Spanish American War. For many years, he drew the covers of the Sunday magazine section of the New York World.
