James RosenquistAmerican painter, 1933–2017

James Rosenquist studied first at the University of Minnesota before moving to New York in 1955 to study at the Arts Students League. The artist combined the technical skills of billboard painting with his study of fine art to create monumental paintings of people and images from 1960s popular culture. While considered a key member of the American Pop Art movement, Rosenquist's approach to mass-produced goods and imagery was very different from his contemporaries such as Andy Warhol. By framing, overlaying, and juxtaposing imagery, the artist explored overt social and political themes in his paintings and print work.
