Edward PenfieldAmerican painter, illustrator, 1866–1925
Born in Brooklyn, New York and studied at the Art Student's League. He was hired by Harper's Weekly first as a freelance illustrator and then as their art director.
As art director for Harper and Brothers, Edward Penfield designed a series of posters to advertise Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, creating a unified marketing campaign in a signature style. Penfield's posters were popular during the so-called Poster Craze of the 1890s. His designs were generally bold with simple shapes and limited but eye-catching color palettes.
