Charles Allan Winter

American painter, 1869–1942
BiographyCharles Allan Winter was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and in 1894 received a scholarship to study at the Academie Julian in Paris, as well as in Rome. Upon his return Winter taught portrait painting classes at the St. Louis School of Fine Art (1898-1901).

In 1901 Winter moved to New York and worked as both a portrait painter and a magazine illustrator for publications such as the radical socialist magazine The Masses. Winter and his wife Alice Beach, who was also an artist, were friends with John Sloan and his then wife Dolly. They vacationed together in Cape Ann. It was there that Winter permanently settled later in life.
