John Douglas WoodwardAmerican painter and illustrator, 1848–1924

John Douglas Woodward was born in Virginia and raised in Covington, Kentucky. He first studied under the Germain paitner T.C. Welsch in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1863 Woodward travelled to New York City to study at Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design.

Woodward is best known for his landscape paintings and book illustrations that mainly consisted of landscapes as well. He illustrated books with scenes of the American countryside, the Hudson River, European landscapes, and views of Egypt, Palestine, and the Holy Land. Woodward additionally provided illustrations for The Century Magazine, Scribner's, and Harper's.
