Rachel Whiteread is a British artist best known for her large-scale, cast sculpture and association with the Young British Artists, a group of progressive artists active in London in the late 1980s and 1990s. She studied painting at Brighton Polytechnic from 1982–1985 and sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1985–1987. The first woman to receive the prestigious Turner Prize in 1993, Whiteread represented the United Kingdom in the 1997 Venice Biennale and was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2006.
