James TannerAmerican ceramic sculptor, painter, and printmaker, born 1941

James Tanner is known for his sculpture in multiple media including bronze, ceramic, and glass. After earning degrees at Florida A&M University and the University of Wisconsin at Madison, studying under Harvey Littleton, he became a professor of art at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where he taught for over thirty years. Tanner is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artist Fellowship and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Minnesota Craft Council, and is in the collections of the Renwick Gallery, the Museum of Art and Design in New York City, and the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis.
