Born in the 40 Acres neighborhood of Wilmington, Delaware, Grant studied at the Wilmington Academy of Art with N.C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, and Henryette Stadelman Whiteside. In 1930 he was awarded the school's first European scholarship. After his sojourn in Europe, he worked as a painter, art instructor, and illustrator in Wilmington, becoming friends with several of Howard Pyle's students. He was very involved with the local arts scene in Wilmington and Rehoboth. After World War II with a young family to support, Grant joined the Hercules Powder Company as Art Director. He served on the board of the Wilmington Society of Fine Art (predecessor to the Delaware Art Museum) in the 1960s. After a 20-year career with Hercules, Grant retired to the Eastern Shore of Maryland where he painted the regional landscape.
