Born in Latvia, Sterne came to the United States with his family around age 20. The Sterne family settled in New York, where he attended the National Academy of Design. In 1902 he first exhibited his work at the Old Country Sketch Club with William Glackens and George "Pop" Hart. Sterne traveled to Paris and then around Europe, India, and the Far East, returning to New York in 1915. After a short marriage to Mabel Dodge, he returned to Europe, making his home in Italy until the mid-1920s. A major exhibition in 1926 established his reputation and he returned to New York.
